“She is a woman that assumes her masculinity just as much as she assumes her femininity and power.”
In this very first chapter of Entrepreneurial women’s official guide to kicking ass and taking names we speak with the young Creative Director behind the new IT brand ROWEN ROSE about her story and the brand. Diving in to the many ups and downs of being your very own boss.
Emma Raphaëlle Rotenberg was one of those cool kids that found a passion in all forms of art and artistic expression from a very young age. You know the kind: The kid we all wished we were and want our children to be. Furthermore she was born and raised in Paris, giving her an extra nudge up the coolness scale. Emma – that now goes under the name Emma Rowen Rose – comes from a multicultural background with a French, Spanish and Polish family. The Whoman Journal sat down with the Creative Director to speak about her brand ROWEN ROSE, which she launched as a one woman band this year. We talk about the struggles of being both chief cook and bottle washer all at the same time and her best advice to the women out there dreaming of starting their own company.
Oh, and did we mention that she is only 22? Go ahead and feel intimidated. We do.
Give us the elevator pitch for ROWEN ROSE. What is the idea behind it? What story do you tell?
“The collections that ROWEN ROSE proposes always tell a story. From the product to the image: everything is curated to create a special atmosphere. All the collections are based on a specific book, poem, art or movie.”
“Based on the play of Federico Garcia Llorca, La Casa de Bernarda Alba, the collection Santa Cruz goes back to the Spanish roots of the designer…”
“The woman behind the brand is always elegant, androgynous – but not in a genderless way. She is a woman that assumes her masculinity just as much as she assumes her femininity and power. It is the same woman every season, but in a different setting, telling a different story. She is always mysterious, with a contrasted personality – with a style in between two worlds. We explain on our website for each season what the base of the collection was, and then the images and all the garments and their details represent the inspiration. Nothing is created out of nothing.. And that’s also why all the collections have a name. It is very important to me.”
“(..) when it is your company and you are the only one holding it together, you have to stay strong.”
Have you always known you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
“I have been a fashion passionate since… forever. I have wanted to become a creative director since I was 13, but at that time I wanted to work for others. It was and is still my dream to become the creative director of an established brand, but today I also have my baby, ROWEN ROSE. I wasn’t born an entrepreneur, but now realize how much it fits me! I am such a control freak, and I can’t stop myself from creating! It is a lot of hard work and mentally it isn’t easy everyday. Having low days happens in every company, but when it is your company and you are the only one holding it together, you have to stay strong. It is hard but very fulfilling.”
Emma launched ROWEN ROSE with a capsule collection for Resort 19. The collection was themed A Chambermaid’s Diary, and at that time ROWEN ROSE was yet to even be a company.
“I didn’t expect such excitement for the collection! By seeing the growing interest people had for the brand and its concept I decided to make it official, and that’s how ROWEN ROSE was born in July 2018. I had to have big balls!”
“They dare, and they like to experiment with fabrics, shapes and colors, and that’s why they fit ROWEN ROSE”
Despite only launching in July this year, ROWEN ROSE is already sported by top fashionistas around the world, bringing the creative works of Emma to international fashion weeks, Chanel shows and our little – fashionable – city of Copenhagen.
ROWEN ROSE is already an IT girl favorite. What do the women you work with have in commen? Who is the ROWEN ROSE girl?
“Thank you! I hope it is an IT girl favorite! The girls that wear my clothes all have a main common point: they are passionate about fashion. They dare, and they like to experiment with fabrics, shapes and colors, and that’s why they fit ROWEN ROSE so well. I can’t wait to see more people dressed in my brand. The clothes will be available from February in Galeries Lafayette Champs Elysées, H Lorenzo and online.”
“Again, have the balls and work hard. That’s key.”
What would be your best advice to women out there dreaming of starting something of their own?
“Starting something on your own is very scary. And even though you have to start with a lot of courage, you still have to think about it for a while before jumping in! Then if you believe in your work, and you know you have the shoulders to carry a company: Go! And again, have the balls and work hard. That’s key.”
